Evaluation and Reflection

Week beginning Monday 21st March 2022:
This week we visiting The Natural History Museum and The Design Museum. I collected primary research and took photos of different objects/items around the museums to give me inspiration for my own work. I then finished my secondary research on weather and completed some artist studies to further my research. I learnt about different styles of clothing from the Design Museum and I learnt more about weather and global warming from The Natural History Museum and my own research.

WWW: I have collected different types of research to inform my project.

EBI: Create more primary research sketches.

Reflecting on my research so far:
Project 1 and 2- In project 1 I enjoyed creating an idea factory using 3 words to help me generate ideas. I thought this effectively helped me think of ideas and also gave me freedom to show them. I also liked my piece I made for the Museum because I was able to use my own ideas to create a multi media piece.

In Project 2 I enjoyed the end of the project where I was able to make final outcomes linked to my interest in fashion. This allowed me the freedom to explore what I might like do pursue in the future and I was able to express the theme self through these designs. I also enjoyed creating repeat patterns and developing them digitally because I also enjoy the graphic design side of art. Furthermore, I enjoyed creating Lino prints in the style of German Expressionism.

For FMP, I would like to continue focusing on fashion and design in my work, and I might also want to create digital art as well as these are the 2 areas I am interested in most.

Week beginning Monday 28th March 2022:
This week I have started creating ideas for FMP. I created a mood board by collecting secondary research and then created fashion designs as a starting point to my project. From this research I found out different styles of clothes I could look at to inspire my own work. My initial idea is to create a piece related to fashion, maybe using graphic design too, to present a world in which it is cold all the time, as it links to weather and also my own experiences with weather due to my circulatory issues.

WWW: I have started forming my initial ideas and presenting them.

EBI: Further my ideas by using different mediums.

Week beginning Monday 4th April:
This week I have created collages using different coloured pieces of paper. I then photocopied and rearranged parts of the collage onto a bigger piece of paper to create a new composition. Furthermore I experimented with creating paper hats from the designs.  These designs will help me develop my final outcome as I can develop the pattern into something either fashion or graphic design based.

WWW: I have created practical work to help me start thinking about what I want to make for my final outcome.

EBI: Try to create designs digitally or develop the collages further into more established 3D pieces.

Easter work:
Over Easter I used my collages to create fashion designs. I also experimented with editing the colours to present the design in different ways.

WWW: I developed my collages into work related to fashion- which is one of the areas of art I am interested in.

EBI: I could have completed more Primary research over the holidays such as taking photos which would have further inspired my work.

Week beginning Monday 25th April:
This week I have created another collage based on the moon- which links to my focus on cold weather. I then used this collage to start creating a lino print on both fabric and paper.

WWW: I have used different materials to present my ideas about cold weather.

EBI: Add extra colours to the lino prints to make the pattern more detailed and eye-catching.

Reflecting on my work so far:
Intent and purpose of work- The intent of my work is to make people aware of what raynauds is and to also create a story by using different mediums to create designs which link directly to cold weather. Also the purpose of my work is to design clothing/create designs which are fashionable but also suitable for cold weather which I think is something that is quite hard to find when shopping for warm clothes.

What does it say about me as an artist?- This shows that I like to create in depth ideas behind my work as I believe art should be meaningful and personal.

What keeps me motivated?-I am kept motivated by getting to make work that I enjoy making as well as making work that is refined and completed to a high standard.

What questions are often asked about my work?- I am asked what my work is about and who it is aimed at.

Target audience- My target audience is mainly teenagers and young adults because I have tried to make my designs look modern and to suit this age group.

The reason behind creating my work- I have decided to create this work because it links to raynauds which is a condition I have which effects my circulation and ultimately makes me feel colder than other people. Therefore I wanted to focus on cold weather and create designs that link to the condition as well as cold weather, as well as fashion designs which present cold weather clothing to link my condition and my interest in fashion to ultimately make fashionable designs aimed at my age group that can also be used in a functional and practical way as well.

Context of my work- I have used a range of materials and processes such as ink for Lino printing and screen printing, card for collages, paint markers, alcohol markers and digital software for fashion designs and other materials such as lino, lino tools, screen printer, press and a craft knife. I have been inspired my artists such as Ellsworth Kelly- with his work inspired my collages and creating new compositions by cutting the collages and repositioning different aspects. I was also inspired by Anne Van Galen and Christopher Raeburn when creating my fashion designs and thinking about the story behind them. Finally I was inspired by my primary research when I visited the design museum and took inspirations from the bold colours of the clothing I saw.

Work linking to previous projects- I think my work links to my last project. This project had the theme of self and I also focused on pattern and fashion in this module of work. I also think I have linked my FMP work to self as well as weather too, by exploring my own condition.

How my work fits with current contemporary practice- I think my work is contemporary because I have used a range of processes and my patterns are very bright and look modern because of the organic shapes I have used.

Week beginning Monday 2nd May:
This week I finished creating my lino prints on paper and card. I also used the lino prints that didn't work into collages, which I then printed on acetate. Finally I made more digital fashion designs, this time using my moon collage design.

WWW: I have completed various practical works using different materials.

EBI: Use these practical works to inform a more refined piece.

Week beginning Monday 9th May:
This week I focused on practical work. at home I made a coat out of paper with my design on, which I then put on a small mannequin. At college I made a pair of mittens which I sewed my previous designs on using different pieces of scrap fabric and cutting them into the shapes of hands and moons.

WWW: I have made a textile outcome which extends my range of processes and material used in my Final Major Project (e.g. using a sewing machine). This presents the more practical and making side of fashion.

EBI: Develop the mittens by using different types and colours of fabric as well as lining up the sides of the mittens better so there is more of a seamless finish.

Evaluation

Reflecting on my Final Major Project so far- In my work I have researched ethics and sustainability, especially to inform me of what materials I should use which are sustainable in my work. However, I think I should complete more specific research on ethics and sustainability such as statistics linked to materials and their impact on the environment. I have mainly kept my bibliography up to date, and i will make sure I add the last few websites I haven't attached. I have identified my audience- teenagers/young adults, specifically interested in fashion. I have planned quite well as I have made a planning document with targets and time planning, as well as created designs to plan for my work. However I think I could've improved my planning a bit by creating mind maps etc. I think my reflecting has been very good as I have reflected on my work and highlighted improvements every week on my reflections page, as well as reflecting on each piece of work I have completed. In my work I have also discussed visual language, such as colour, shape and pattern.

How does my work link back to the theme?- I have responded to the theme personally, firstly by focusing on my interest in fashion and graphics by creating a body of work which involves these 2 pathways. Also I have focused on cold weather and raynauds which is a condition I have, and I have focused on the impact cold weather has on me to make my project personal to me. I have successfully applied ethics in my work by creating work which doesn't cause offense, such as ensuring that I have not used any cultural appropriation. Also my work doesn't use any offensive symbols and it is bright and colourful so it is suitable for anyone to see. I think my work communicates my ideas well as I have explored my ideas through a variety of work and mediums, and I have presented cold weather by creating collages, mittens and more, which shows the story I am telling and the link between hands, raynauds and cold weather. Although, I think my ideas may not be obvious to everyone because the designs are quite abstract. I learnt different facts about weather and global warming, which has informed my work by making me aware of the materials I use so I myself can reduce my impact on global warming.

Did I do enough research and preparation?- I have used my artists and specialist pathway effectively to inform my project. I have taken inspiration from the artists I researched, such as the storytelling of Anne van Galen and the shape of Christopher Raeburn's clothing designs. I have also focused on the 2 specialist pathways I'm interested in: fashion and graphics. Although I think I could've improved this aspect of my research by researching more graphic design artists. In my work I have used my primary research quite well. I have been inspired by the Design Museum, which I visited and took photos there, and used this inspiration to inform my own work. However, to improve my primary research I could have sketched more observational drawings to improve my observational drawing skills and use those skills in my work. I have effectively researched materials, techniques and processes as I have experimented with a range of materials such as creating wind drawing machines and making collages and lino prints. This has allowed me to discover what making processes I like and hence helping me decide what I wanted to make for FMP. To improve my research into materials, techniques and processes I feel like I could've researched more artists work linked to these techniques to help give me tips on how to maximise my ability when trying these new techniques. I think the most effective research was creating a mind map and collecting images, both online and when visiting the Design Museum. These helped my pattern and fashion designs as it allowed me to see visually what colours, shapes and forms intrigued me. Overall, to improve my research I would have made more observational drawings and researched more artists linked to graphics.

Am I pleased with the quality of the final solutions? How could it be improved?- I personally think the most successful parts of my project was my digital fashion designs, using photoshop and photography to attach my patterns to clothing, and making a physical textile item- mittens. I think this has allowed me to use a range of textile materials and digital software and has portrayed my main idea of creating garments suitable for cold weather. However, I feel like the mittens aren't fully refined as it is one of the first times I have used a sewing machine, and I don't think some of the colours work such as the yellow fabric. Also if I had more time I would've liked to create a more elaborate garment such as a long sleeved top/coat. i felt that at times my lino print didn't go to plan as I accidentally cut out the wrong areas, and also some of my prints didn't line up. I managed this by using the unsuccessful lino prints to make further collages to add to my collection of work. In my work I have focused mainly on the visual language elements: colour, shape and pattern. I have used these imaginatively in my work by using both contrasting and similar colours to create an interesting range of colour, as well as focusing on the shapes of hands and moons, then cutting them into more abstract shapes to create a variety of organic shapes from 2 main ideas. Although some of the abstract shapes look excited and interesting, I feel that some of my collages are too abstract and don't portray my ideas fully, which is something I would do differently next time. I have used my materials creatively, such as I have used different colours for my linos (reduction prints) which adds more detail and depth to the work. However I think I could've refined some of the work I did if I had more time to make the pieces more developed. I think my reflective practice has been very good and I've ensured that I reflect on all my work so I know how to improve it. I think I have considered sustainability a lot in my work. For example I have used left over fabric for the mittens and also reused the unsuccessful lino prints to create more art rather than getting rid of them. However I felt that I used a lot of paper and newspaper print when creating the lino prints, which I could've reduced to reduce waste.

Did I plan and organise myself well?- I felt like I planned and organised well. I have met the deadlines and also completed a sufficient amount of work in this time. Although, I feel like I could've planned better earlier in my project as I only came up with my final ideas later in the project. Next time I will make sure I create planning documents and mind maps right at the start so I have more time to complete my work and don't have to complete my work all in one go.

What will the viewer think or feel when looking at my work?- I think my presentation is good on my website and sketchbook as I have made it clear with titles and putting my work in the right sections. Also the images are good quality and look tidy. Although I feel that I could've used my sketchbook more to make the pages look more intriguing and eye-catching. I think I have identified my audience quite well as I have focused a lot on fashion and graphics which is modern and appealing to teens/young adults. Although, Some of my work may appeal to a different audience such as the mittens as they are not worn by a lot of people in that age range. My work can be effective in an operational context, such as the mittens being a garment you are able to wear, and also the collages being something that can be transferred to graphics. I could also present my work on different items of clothing. If I could add to my work I would've made more garments using my patterns.

Have you developed as a creative practitioner?- My personal goals as a creative practitioner is to go into the fashion or graphics industry, and I am thinking I might want to study a course specific to this at university. My project has supported my progression to this goal as it has allowed me to learn more about photoshop and using a sewing machine which are 2 skills needed for fashion and graphics. Additionally, I can use this collection of work in my portfolio in the future if i decide to go to university or apply for related jobs and apprenticeships. To keep moving towards this goals I can keep practising with these materials and processes to improve as well as creating more work to add to my portfolio.

How I've responded to my evaluation

I have used my evaluation to help improve my work. I have improved my planning page by creating a mood board, a weekly planning page and a plan of the materials and processes I wanted to use. This clearly shows the goals I set out to complete at the start of my project. I also researched specific ethical and sustainability facts and statistics which I put on my research page, and added the websites to my bibliography. Finally I researched and analysed Kate Banazi's work, who is a silk screen-printer but also uses graphic design in her work. I did this to broaden my research, especially in graphic design which is one of the areas that interests me.

Week beginning Monday 16th May:
This week I started thinking about how I want to present my work in the exhibition and I created a visual image on photoshop to show this. I also started making another pair of mittens, this time using different fabrics for the pattern and adding extra layers to the mittens.

WWW: I have visually shown how I would like to present my work in the exhibition which shows the development of my project.

EBI: Finish making the second pair of mittens and create more presentation ideas to compare and choose which one is best.

Week beginning 23rd May - Final week of FMP:
This week I finished my second pair of mittens and took photos in the photography studio of my 3D work using soft boxes to create the right lighting.
I improved my Wix by adding to my Bibliography and ensuring that the presentation of the website is clear and neat.

WWW: I have taken high quality photos of my final 3D outcomes which clearly shows the detail of the work.

EBI: Recheck Wix to make sure everything is on my website.
